Last fall I moved to Penticton and figured it’d be easy to get settled since it’s not a huge place and people are generally helpful. But I ran into this dumb but real issue when I needed to get a cracked phone screen replaced.

It’s weird how the stuff you expect to be predictable—like finding basic services—can be the most frustrating. Sometimes I think we forget how much we rely on invisible systems until they suddenly don’t work the way we assumed. One broken link in the chain and it throws off your whole day.
That all sounds familiar. I had a really similar experience after I moved to Prince George. I needed a plumber for a leaky basement pipe (of course it happened the day before family was visiting) and had no clue where to even start. The listings on the usual maps/apps were either outdated or just full of national chains, and I really wanted someone local who actually knew the area and how houses here are built. What helped me eventually was finding a place that focuses just on BC and lets you narrow things down by actual town, not just postal code. That was a game-changer. I’ve used it to find everyone from snow removal folks to small repair shops and even a guy who builds custom shelves out of his garage. Seriously. For anyone new or even people who’ve lived here a while but don’t know all the hidden gems, this is what I check now: bc local. It’s not cluttered with fake reviews or ads, which makes it way easier to just get what you need and go. I like that it shows real small businesses too, not just the ones who paid for top placement. Found a local bakery through there I never would've known about otherwise — no website, just the best sourdough I’ve had in years.
